Welcome to The Draking Point

07/29/2008

Answering calls…it’s what I do. I am a salesman. I make at least sixty calls to various companies a day. It’s hard work. You start off as a hunter, build your clientele, and then kick your feet up as a farmer.

I am also a Republican. And no, I am not a frat boy who grunts it out of bravado, but a firm believer in the three Cs of the Western World; Christianity, Capitalism, and the Constitution. I grew up in small town Ohio. Nothing special; a Clark Kent upbringing in the suburbs of the Midwest. People know that I am a part-time illustrator and I speak fluent Spanish. Led Zeppelin is my favorite band.

Since childhood, I had always been fascinated by history, economics, politics, and warfare…perhaps more so than most people my age. Because of this, the most pivotal moment in my life was probably 9/11. I knew that American history would never be the same again. For the first real time in my life, I saw government, history, economics, and war, and I witnessed how howlingly real they could be. The mainstream media disgusted me as the years passed and I witnessed a volley of cynicism, defeatism, big government solutions, and a questioning of America’s place in the world. How easily it seemed that people lost their moral bearings and called terrorists “freedom fighters” and America a world villain. My 5-year tenure as a Republican in academia was rocky at times, with me erupting in fiery debates with classmates and professors arguing economics and policy. These fights were typically a dog pile. A righteous anger at the direction of America welled up within me (and not the administration-centered “wrong direction” embraced by the left, but something larger), and I realized that the sidelines were no longer my place.

I once heard the phrase “A life without cause is a life without effect.” My dad told me that.

After lengthy aggregation of personal spending money, deep daydreaming, and a thoughtful brandy, I bought a fat bundle of software with a high-performance computer and decided that I would decisively put my convictions into action. I did.

My name is Drake Dunaway. I am a salesman, an illustrator, and a Republican. And now I am answering one of the most important calls of my life.
